Women Newly Registered and Women Newly Screened RetrospectiveThe following table presents the volumes of women Newly Registered and Newly Screened in the last six quarters. As noted on page 4, the definitions of the two categories differ slightly.
| Newly Registered: | This is the total number of women whose first report was collected during the specified time period. |
| Newly Screened: | This is the total number of women who are being registered for the first time in CytoBase and whose specimen was collected during the specified time period. |
The Women Newly Registered and Women Newly Screened sections in earlier issues of the CytoBase Report have drawn on these definitions and minor variations thereof, but cannot be compared to one another. The figures presented below have been generated by applying these definitions consistently for all of the quarters, so that comparisons may be drawn.

There is considerable fluctuation in the number of Newly Registered Women across the quarters. This is largely due to the timing of participating laboratories connecting to CytoBase and transferring legacy (pre-1997) data, and the scheduling of each laboratory’s regular submissions.
The Newly Screened Women figures reveals a more stable trend, subject to some seasonal variations, and decreasing as the proportion of repeat patients increases. In some quarters, Newly Screened Women outnumber Newly Registered Women. This may be accounted for in that the first report for a Newly Screened Woman may not reach CytoBase to be registered until the quarter following her screening.
