Women Registered: January 1, 1999 - December 31, 1999 [Back to Top]

The following table describes the age distribution of women registered for the first time in the CytoBase system during the calendar year 1999, and as a percentage of the female population of the province of Ontario. In this period, the system captured 11.05% of the female population.

The qualifying criteria for inclusion in this list are that 1) the patient’s specimen was collected during the time period in question and 2) this is the patient’s first report registered in the system. The criteria used in Volume 1 and 2 of the CytoBase reports were less stringent, counting all patients who were being registered in the database for the first time, regardless of the specimen date. Because of this, the figures appearing in Volume 1 and 2 are not comparable with those in Volume 3

Age Group Number Registered Ontario Population1 % of cohort Registered (annualized)

Distribution of Report Diagnoses by Age and Class [Back to Top]

The following table lists reported findings categorized by diagnostic class (most severe finding on the report) and the woman’s age. The age is calculated based on the woman’s date of birth relative to the date of the specimen.

1 INSCYTE will follow-up with the source laboratories for clarification of other malignancies.
2 The "other abnormal" category includes findings and/or suspicion of abnormalities that were not formally classified.
3 The total number of reports in the above table is less than the number of reports registered because in certain cases the age of the woman, or the diagnostic class cannot be determined from submitted information.

Reports of ASCUS and AGUS [Back to Top]

Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance account for 2.98% (34,951) of reported findings.

Atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance account for 0.53% (6,271) of reported findings.

Reports of Low Grade and High Grade Lesions [Back to Top]

Low grade intraepithelial lesions account for 1.14% (13,335) of reported findings.

High grade intraepithelial lesions account for 0.38% (4,406) of reported findings.

Reports of Carcinoma and Other Malignancies [Back to Top]

Specimen Adequacy [Back to Top]

Of all reports where specimen adequacy was reported (925,285), 0.75% of the specimens were deemed unsatisfactory for a cytological evaluation. The remaining 99.25% of the specimens were deemed satisfactory although some of these exhibited specific limitations as described below and on the following page.

Within the specimens which were adequate for cytological evaluation (918,300), 25.65% were limited in some way and 74.35% were without limitation.
